Hard Court Domination: Jannik Sinner defends ATP Finals crown

Jannik Sinner secured his second ATP Finals championship, an outcome widely anticipated even before the tournament began, given his exceptional performance in indoor tennis over the past two seasons, marked by 31 consecutive victories and sweeping both the 2024 and 2025 ATP Finals.

Any final between Sinner and Alcaraz is a sign of consistency, and therefore, a mark of the quality of any tournament these two attend. The championship match of the ATP Finals on Sunday wasn't an exception. Both Jannik and Carlos played outstandingly well in the opening set, especially on serve. The sole breakpoint, which also served as a set-ball for the Spaniard, was saved by Sinner with a second serve at 187 km/h! Alcaraz's downfall stemmed from his own inaccurate approaches to the net and ineffective drop shots that Jannik easily returned. Carlos's tactic of quickly finishing rallies could be easily explained by a medical timeout, caused by a hamstring injury at the end of the first set. After the game Carlos said that the injury wasn't the reason for his defeat, but it caused serious doubts about his participation in the Davis Cup the following week.

Sinner had been inspired by the home crowd throughout the tournament. Although he lost his first serve and  had plenty of double faults in the second set of the championship game, he was consistent and reliable enough on the baseline. The Italian thwarted Alcaraz's attempts to challenge his supremacy on indoor courts, where he remains undefeated. Even though the Spaniard finished the season as the world #1, it was Sinner who once again hit the jackpot in a single tournament: the undefeated champion of the ATP Finals earned over 5 million dollars. For the second consecutive year, the Italian took home a substantial double cash prize from Riyadh to Turin.

Besides this magnificent duo, it is worth mentioning the semi-finalists Alex de Minaur and Félix Auger-Aliassime. Both made their ATP Finals debut this year, with Alex becoming the first player since 2016 who managed to advance to the semis with only one victory at the group stage, while Felix knocked out Zverev and secured his spot in the semis, which ultimately led him to the #5 position in the ATP ranking.

Perhaps, the intrigue for next season lies in whether Sinner and Alcaraz will dominate all Grand Slam finals or let someone break through. Anyway, the first half of the upcoming season promises to be special for both Jannik and Carlos; the Spaniard is still seeking a trophy in Australia, while the Italian has yet to win Roland Garros.  With this in mind, how can one not recall the triple match point in last season's most epic and dramatic final, which everyone is rightly calling the best game of 2025?
