Both women reached the Melbourne title match without dropping a set, setting the stage for a thrilling championship clash that more than lived up to expectations. For much of the match, Sabalenka struggled to cope with Rybakina's relentless first-strike tennis, particularly after her devastating serve. Beginning in the second set, however, the world No. 1 gradually found her rhythm on return and broke at love in the tenth game to level the contest. Sabalenka then surged to a 3-0 lead in the deciding set, seemingly taking control.

But Rybakina had one final response. 

After losing five consecutive games, the Kazakh turned the match around by winning the next five herself. Her coach, Stefano Vukov, repeatedly urged her to stay aggressive, and when the defining moments arrived, she executed that plan to perfection. Rybakina became the first woman since Maria Sharapova in 2008 to defeat three Top-6 opponents in the quarterfinals, semifinals and final of a Grand Slam. Judging by both her level and the consistency she has maintained over the past several seasons, this was a title she thoroughly deserved.

Her second major championship came 1,302 days after her first. Unlike her Wimbledon triumph in 2022, which earned no ranking points, this Australian Open victory propelled Rybakina to the top of the WTA Race, exactly where her performances suggest she belongs. Sabalenka, meanwhile, continues to make Melbourne her own.

She has now reached the Australian Open final for the fourth consecutive year. Although she fell just short this time, Melbourne remains a special place in her career—the city where she won her first Grand Slam title and where she will undoubtedly return next year determined to reclaim the trophy. Considering that Sabalenka and Rybakina also contested last season's WTA Finals championship match, it is entirely possible that the coming year will be defined by their rivalry. Both possess the level, the consistency and, most importantly, the quality of tennis to make that happen.
