First&Red ambassador Aryna Sabalenka has not played a match since her defeat in the Australian Open final, yet she has remained firmly in the spotlight. Just days before Indian Wells, the Belarusian accepted a marriage proposal from her partner, Georgios Frangulis, becoming engaged. She also unveiled the Saby’s Break donut collection as part of our joint project, welcomed a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy named Ash into her family, attended Gucci's runway show during Milan Fashion Week, and was nominated for the Laureus World Sports Award in the Sportswoman of the Year category.

Despite her absence from competition, Sabalenka has comfortably retained her place at the top of the WTA rankings. She has now spent 80 weeks as World No. 1, becoming just the 11th woman in history to reach that milestone. Whatever happens in California, Aryna will remain atop the rankings thanks to her sizeable points advantage over the chasing pack.

However, unlike fellow Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who lifted the Indian Wells trophy twice (2012 and 2016), Sabalenka is still searching for her first title in the desert. Both of her previous finals ended in disappointment: she fell to Elena Rybakina in 2023 before losing to Mirra Andreeva in last year's championship match.

Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, meanwhile, has remained active since her triumph in Melbourne, although the results have been mixed. She reached the quarterfinals in Doha before losing to rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko, then retired from her third-round match in Dubai against Croatia's Antonia Ružić because of illness.

Rybakina arrived in Indian Wells on a high, however, after successfully defending the Eisenhower Cup mixed doubles exhibition title alongside Taylor Fritz. The event featured eight pairs competing in knockout matches played as a single first-to-10-point tiebreak.

The Kazakh has already stated that one of her goals this season is to challenge for the World No. 1 ranking. That opportunity will almost certainly come—but perhaps not just yet. Becoming World No. 2 after the Indian Wells–Miami swing is a far more realistic short-term objective. California has already been a happy hunting ground for Rybakina, who lifted the trophy there three years ago, while Miami has brought her two runner-up finishes.

The WTA Tour has produced an extraordinary level of parity this season. Twelve tournaments have crowned twelve different champions, and many of the sport's biggest names are still waiting for their first title of the year. Another new winner in Indian Wells would extend that remarkable streak to a "baker's dozen."

The women's singles draw features 96 players, with all 32 seeded competitors receiving first-round byes.

Sabalenka's projected route to the final could include rising American prospect Iva Jović, 2018 champion Naomi Osaka, the previously mentioned Victoria Mboko, and two formidable Americans—Amanda Anisimova and Coco Gauff. It will also be fascinating to watch former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu continue her comeback. The Canadian, who received a wild card from the organizers, won Indian Wells seven years ago and could already face Gauff in the second round.

Rybakina's half of the draw is considerably more crowded with title contenders. It includes Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, defending champion Mirra Andreeva, Americans Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys, two-time finalist Maria Sakkari, and Iga Świątek.

The Pole, in particular, has enjoyed tremendous success at Indian Wells, winning titles in 2022 and 2024. Alongside Sabalenka and Rybakina, she enters the tournament as one of the leading favorites.

Interestingly, ten women in tournament history have won Indian Wells twice, yet no one has ever completed a three-peat. Świątek appears ideally positioned to accomplish what even Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, and Maria Sharapova never managed.

It is also worth remembering that the Polish star owns one of tennis's rarest achievements: the Sunshine Double. In 2022, she captured both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season, joining only Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, and Steffi Graf—who accomplished the feat twice—in that exclusive club.
